Sustainable Economy
Our long term goal is to build a sustainable salmon economy based on wild steelhead and salmon. The NCSA sees the commercial industry as a central component to achieving this. Commercial salmon fishers are currently faced with little hope and an average income of $12,000 a year. Their industry is controlled by a few large processors who have total control, paying unfair prices and owning over 50% of licenses. These large companies stuff one of the most valuable fish in the world into cans, creating a low value high volume product. We need a fundamental shift of control away from these companies to north coast residents who can create jobs and wealth from sustainable caught high value salmon products.
